Exploring Bequia for the First Time

Once we were all settled in, formalities were completed, and everything was shipshape, we decided to spend a day ashore exploring the town, meeting people, window shopping, eating out – all those fun things about a new island. There are so many restaurants ashore that it’s hard to choose one over another, but we decided to visit the Frangipani Restaurant which is located right on the waterfront just a short walk down the famous Bequia Boardwalk, actually a concrete walkway with very few boards. I need to remind you once again that most countries outside the USA are not handicap friendly. We are always prepared for a bit of maneuvering to reach places we want to visit. Several times Joy had to step off the scooter, walk around a bump or two, then continue on our way. It’s all part of our daily routine.

And it’s all worth the effort; after all, it gives Joy another chance to continue her quest in search of the world’s best Pina Colada! We were one of only two customers, early for dinner, late for lunch, but they still took good care of us. No rush, no worries, just enjoy and sing out if you need or want anything.

After lunch we began our stroll through town, stopping here and there for photo opportunities, then wandering into the tourist center looking for current information about the island. The lady in charge that day gave us some brochures, inquired about our stay, and was a bit amazed to think that Joy would be traveling the Caribbean while using a scooter wheelchair to get around town.

There were a couple of young girls in their school uniforms who were very curious about Joy and me, and they wanted to see who we were and what we were doing in their town. They wore bright smiles and were happy to be able to offer local information about their country and their island. You can see quite a bit of the town in a few hours, but as we stopped here and there to talk to people along the way, we found the afternoon quickly slipping away. We knew another visit to this island would be required.
