We had wanted to take a taxi tour of Bequia every time we’d visited the island, but it just never seemed to work out. This year though, we booked the tour and made a special effort to make it happen.
We hopped up into the taxi, and were treated to a morning of exploring the island from the back of a truck. Each bump in the road was narrated by Lubin, our taxi driver, and we learned more about the island, its history, and its people. We’d never known that the whaling industry was a big part of the island’s past economy. Even to this day, there is a small whaling industry limited to a short period of time, but the facilities and fishing harbor still is a very busy place, all year long.
As we wandered the narrow roads and gazed at peaceful settings throughout the island, we could understand the easy going way of life that is at the heart of Bequia. Over the years this island had become one of our favorite places, and we always enjoy our visits here.
